About CAP Units

CAP (Combined Action Program) was a Marine Corps counterinsurgency strategy during the vietnam war. CAP Units consisted of a squad (12ish) Marines, and one Navy Corpsman, who would work with the South Vietnamese Popular Forces (PFs) to live in and among one particular village, providing security for the village, and allowing more in depth knowledge of local areas and movements. The program started with the name CAC (Combined Action Company), in 1965, but was transitioned to CAP (Combined Action Program) by 1966. The Combined Action Program ran from 1965 to 1971, and is considered to be one of the most successful counterinsurgency campaigns by the US Military.
